May is National Wetlands Month, including these salt marshes at Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge, DE. Dominated by grasses where rivers meet the sea, salt marshes are regularly flooded by salty tidal water. They rival tropical forests and cornfields as rich, highly productive ecosystems.
